Sarah Lee

"Such gardens are not made."

Rudyard Kipling

The photographs in the series shown on this website take inspiration from Rudyard Kipling's quotation and convey Sarah's belief that gardens are a delicate balance between the work of the gardener and the force of nature; thus a garden cannot be made but is a compromise between what nature dictates and the gardener desires.

The presence of the gardener is apparent throughout her images, conveyed in the details that are recorded; the ball of string, old tobacco tins and a steel bucket. The weathered appearance of these materials suggests the work of nature and these elements combine to produce images that are quiet and evocative, reflecting Sarah's belief that a garden is a sanctuary, a place to escape to.
