"Such gardens are not made." Rudyard Kipling
The photographs in the series shown on this website take inspiration from Rudyard Kipling's quotation and convey Sarah's belief that gardens are a delicate balance between the work of the gardener and the force of nature; thus a garden cannot be made but is a compromise between what nature dictates and the gardener desires. The presence of the gardener is apparent throughout her images, conveyed in the details that are recorded; the ball of string, old tobacco tins and a steel bucket. The weathered appearance of these materials suggests the work of nature and these elements combine to produce images that are quiet and evocative, reflecting Sarah's belief that a garden is a sanctuary, a place to escape to. |
